Healing the Wounds of Life

Some wounds don’t heal properly and require specialized care. For most people, wound healing is a natural, uneventful process. Some wounds, however, may fail to heal normally. There are many reasons for this. Problematic wounds are common among diabetics and individuals with other medical conditions that interfere with the body’s natural healing process.

Our professional medical team in the Bangasser Wound Care Center at Redlands Community Hospital offers a full range of wound treatment services. We also help you manage medical conditions associated with delayed wound healing.

If a wound fails to heal normally, your medical team will first assess the wound to determine why. Then they will treat and redress your wound. Later, they will evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment. Some wounds may need more advanced therapies such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy or limb preservation evaluation.

Outpatient Wound Care

At Redlands Community Hospital, we offer outpatient wound care under the direction of wound care specialists. Our interdisciplinary medical team uses an innovative blend of new technologies and traditional treatments to help wounds heal. We first identify the root causes of resistance to healing and then develop an effective, individualized care plan. We also address any underlying conditions, such as diabetes, poor circulation, or lifestyle habits, that might inhibit the natural healing process.

Tender Loving Care

Our wound care staff are committed to providing optimal care with dignity and respect. We will make every effort to meet your physical and emotional needs, as we believe a holistic approach to health is an integral part of the healing process. Our personalized wound care plans encompass wellness and prevention education as well as treatment of the immediate problem.

Factors Affecting Healing

Various factors can slow or stop wound healing: infections, nutritional deficiencies, physical disabilities, immune system suppression, diabetes, or chemotherapy or radiation. A lack of oxygen or nutrients can negatively impact wound healing, as can inefficient waste removal in the body. Inadequate blood supply is often a significant factor; patients with diabetes and other venous or arterial conditions can experience problems with blood supply. For patients with diabetes, wounds in the feet are especially at risk. If not treated correctly, such wounds may eventually result in amputation.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, commonly referred to as HBO, is a specialized treatment that boosts the oxygen supply to wounds, facilitating internal healing. It's particularly beneficial for wounds that haven't responded to conventional therapies. Moreover, the financial aspect is often reassuring, as HBO treatments are typically covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most insurance plans.

During HBO sessions, patients are surrounded by 100 percent oxygen at higher-than-normal atmospheric pressure. This innovative approach allows for enhanced healing processes while offering patients the opportunity to relax and enjoy television programming.

In addition to hyperbaric oxygen therapy, our network of specialists provides a comprehensive range of services tailored to patients with persistent wound issues. From radiology, dietary support, infection control, vascular surgery, orthopedic interventions, and laboratory diagnostics, we offer a multidisciplinary approach to ensure optimal healing outcomes.

Limb Preservation Program

When it’s necessary to remove part or all of a limb due to slow healing or infection, we make every effort to salvage the limb. We offer both metal and bone implants, allografts and autografts, and other techniques to avoid primary amputation and preserve function. Our Vascular Surgery Program offers a full-service Vascular Lab to assess the best plan of care. The lab conducts weekly self-referral screening. If you or someone you know would like to request free screening please call our Vascular Discovery Lab Navigator at 909-335-5561 for more information.
