Tony Radcliffe Makes a Colorful Return to Redlands Community Hospital Foundation "Evening With The Artists" Event

REDLANDS, Calif.– Anthony (Tony) Radcliffe’s love for painting and its contrasting, vibrant colors has grown significantly over the last few years, and he showcases that admiration in his dramatic scenes. On April 19, Radcliffe will return as one of six artists featured in Redlands Community Hospital Foundation’s fifth annual “Evening with the Artists” fundraising event.

“I’ve been very supportive of the Redlands Community Hospital Foundation for a very long time,” Radcliffe said. “I have nothing but respect and admiration for the staff, the organization and appreciate their dedication to displaying quality artwork on its hospital’s walls.”

Instituted in 1978, the Redlands Community Hospital Foundation’s Art Program exhibits a growing collection of more than 750 works of original art in the hallways, offices and waiting rooms of the hospital, thus supporting the notion that the visual arts and the healing arts go hand in hand.

Radcliffe, who earned a zoology degree from UCLA and an MD from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, only began to focus on his paintings in 2006 but has already won several awards and is a member of the Brandon Art Gallery in Fallbrook, California, the Redlands Art Association, the Palm Springs Art Museum, and the Inland Empire Art Association.

Radcliffe paints on gesso board and uses a red/orange gesso as background to enhance his color choices. He remains fascinated with how a minor alteration in color can exaggerate a shape or push it into the background.

“I love to show how light, either cool or warm, moves through a scene, illuminating some areas and putting others in shadow,” explains Radcliffe. “I often use color straight from the tube and enjoy placing contrasting colors and values next to each other to create a more vibrant effect.”

Radcliffe began taking art classes after his retirement, and he preferred oil painting to watercolors or acrylics. His passion for painting has grown tremendously over the years and he has even built a studio on the back of his house and paints with a group of fellow artists at his home on a weekly basis. He continues to take classes and learn new techniques.

Radcliffe joins artists Dennis Hare, Penny Fedorchak, Darlene Katz, Hanna Adler and Ray Nordwall at the annual “Evening with the Artists” event. Radcliffe’s artwork will be available for purchase at the Stan and Ellen Weisser Education Pavilion on the RCH campus from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 19. Proceeds will benefit the Redlands Community Hospital Foundation’s Art Fund. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served during the evening’s elegant event. Tickets are $20.
