REDLANDS, Calif.– Darlene Katz, an award-winning artist based in Southern California, has a doctorate in immunology but has always been artistically active, working extensively with oil and acrylic paints, pencil, charcoal, and clay sculpture from an early age. Katz will be one of six artists featured during the fifth annual “Evening with the Artists” hosted by the Redlands Community Hospital Foundation on Friday, April 19.
A scientist by training and an artist by choice, Katz believes that identical skills are necessary for both art and science.
“Art requires knowledge of technical information and science requires creativity,” says Katz. “Both sides of the brain come into play for an artist to be successful: technical and creative aspects of the painting are both essential in developing an emotional response in the observer.”
A professional artist since 1999, Katz’s award-winning work is displayed in Southern California galleries and national juried shows, as well as in private and corporate collections. Her inspiration comes from her travels as well as everyday scenes. She has created a series of oil paintings for each subject she paints, which highlight her versatility with color and value, as well as subject matter.
To this end, Katz paints landscapes, figures and portraits, as well as animals and still life. She enjoys being technically proficient without losing the freshness of her painting, no matter what the subject. She does not limit herself to one particular approach in her paintings, but her unique style is recognizable in all of her work.
“In my own paintings, I look for value, composition and simplicity. Subject matter is also important, but the power and resulting statement of my paintings comes from the technical interpretation of the work. My goal for each painting is to capture and remember a unique moment in time.”
Katz is active in California art guilds and galleries and is also a member of Oil Painters of America, The American Impressionist Society and the California Art Club and has won numerous awards for her pieces. She has studied art at Sarah Lawrence College in New York and Northwestern University in Illinois and has also studied oil painting with well known artists, including Sebastian Capella and Vanessa Lemen.
Katz joins regional artists Dennis Hare, Tony Radcliffe, Penny Fedorchak, Hanna Adler, and Ray Nordwall at the annual “Evening of the Artists” event. Katz’s artwork will be available for purchase at the Stan and Ellen Weisser Education Pavilion on the RCH campus from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 19. Proceeds will benefit the Redlands Community Hospital Foundation’s Art Fund. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served during the evening’s elegant event. Tickets are $20.
The Foundation’s Art Program began in 1978, and today, the hospital exhibits a collection of more than 750 works of original art throughout its hallways and waiting areas.
